CLUE NO.1 PALACE OF THE SADA
Imagine Juana Enriquez, the protagonist of our story in Sos, hurried because she has already felt labour pains and running through these streets to reach the most important house in the city: The Palace of the Sada. From that day the destiny of the palace was irremediably linked to one figure: Fernando the Catholic who was the son of Juana Enriquez.
The palace is enormous, with a massive facade of ashlar stone in which it seems that there is not a single joint. It is a magnificent piece of stonework. It houses the Interpretation Centre of Fernando II of Aragon, and you can take a tour of his fascinating life.

Sos del Rey Católico is a recent name, since 1925. The residents of Sos asked permission to change the name to honour their most illustrious inhabitant. And they continue celebrating his birth every March 10th in a festival of Cultural Interest in which the whole town dresses in period costumes. What king gave Sos the nickname of “Del Rey Católico”? Add up the number of letters until there is only one left.

“EVERY PIG HAS ITS SAN MARTÍN“: This is a well-known Spanish expression – equivalent to “Every dog has it’s day” in English. Do you know why they link it to San Martin? It refers to San Martín de Tours because the celebration coincides with the dates of the traditional slaughter of the pig. Find out the date and add its numbers.

CLUE NO.3 PLAZA DE LA SARTÉN (SARTÉN SQUARE)
You are in the old Jewish quarter of Sos. The Jews were a fundamental part of the economic and social success of this city. And its Jewish quarter was one of the most important in Aragon.
But look at the contradiction: The Jews of Sos, who contributed so much to the well-being of the village, who were Kosher vintners, furriers, weavers and moneylenders above all, were expelled by the same king they saw born in the town. Many had even converted to Christianity. If you go through the Coliseo street, Mentidero street, La Luna street and Plaza de la Sartén you will often see a cross carved above a hole in the entrance to the houses. This hole is where the Jews, when building their homes, put verses of the Torah: the Mezuzah. If you have a cross over it is because the family was converted to Christianity.

CLUE: FLIGHT TO SANGÜESA
In 1492 the Catholic Kings expelled the Jews from Castile and Aragon. Of the 130 Jews that made up the Sos Jewish community, only 42 were converted to Christianity. The other 88 moved to the neighbouring town of Sangüesa, in Navarre territory and which had no expulsion order. Thus began the decline of Sos that lost 1/6th of its population and saw the disappearance of a large part of its active population, who had been dedicated to agriculture and the textile industry.
But the fortune of the Jews in Sangüesa did not last long. When was the decree of Jewish expulsion signed in Navarra? Add its figures.

CLUE NO.4 THE QUEEN’S ENTRANCEWAY
Sos was completely walled, but over the centuries, when the wall lost its defensive function, more doorways were opened. In total there are seven doors in the wall. And this, the Queen’s doorway, according to popular tradition, is the one by which Queen Juana entered Sos for the birth of Fernando II.
It is an entranceway that is flanked by a large defensive tower, with three sides. Can you look inside, and guess where the wooden structure that allowed entrance was located?

If you approach the voussoirs (wedge-shaped stones) above the right door of the entrance, you will see two graffiti made by a French soldier during the War of Independence. On one it says “Merde pour les volantiers de Mina” and in another “Poisson pour Mina”. You wonder who “Mina” was, and why the name inspires so much hate. Well, it was none other than Francisco Espoz y Mina who, with his volunteer army of 30,000 men, liberated Sos from the French army. His attacks, according to what our French soldier says, must have been intense. In what year did the War of Independence end? Add up the numbers until there is only one digit left.

The square in Sos was always the most lively place in the town. And today it still is. Here and in its surroundings, you will find great places to have some wine and a tapa, or eat a full meal – as well as enjoying the scenery.
Formerly, among the colonnades of the Plaza de la Villa, a regular market was held. Find the triangular hole on one of its columns. This hole served to locate a weighing device, known as a Steelyard or Roman balance. And next to it, you have a measuring rod to measure fabrics and threads.

This tremendous Renaissance building in front of you is the Sos Town Hall. They built it in the 16th century, and one of the things that will most attract your attention are two sinister writings on its façade. This one in particular: THE CURSE OF THE MOTHER DESTROYS AT THE ROOT THE CHILDREN AND THE HOUSE. The moralisers of Sos put it on the wall to teach the population how they should act. But they made a mistake in placing the verses because they do not refer to the correct part of the Bible from where they are taken. What chapter and verses did they use? Add the chapter and verse until you have a single digit.

Queen Estefanía de Navarra built the church of San Esteban. If you approach the Romanesque portal, you will see her represented in one of the sculpted columns. Her face has been worn away. CLUE NO.7 CASTLE
You are standing before the most primitive remains of Sos. Until the 12th century, Sos was a defensive square that had a small castle and an annexed church (the ancient part of the Church of San Esteban). As the city population grew, the castle was remodelled, along with some of its towers and walls. Of the original castle, all that it left is this tall tower. From it, you can see right across the Five Towns area: The Sierra de Santo Domingo and the Val de Onsella. Go up. It’s well worth seeing.

CLUE: TO SHELTER
The castle of Sos was originally built on the highest and most easily defended part of the town. Its inhabitants lived far below, at some distance, so that in case of war the enemy could not use the houses as a base from which to attack the castle. The people of Sos would run to St. Stephen’s Church, and from there to the castle where they would remain sheltered until the fighting ended. Now we only see a square tower, but before, the fortress could have accommodated the whole population of Sos. How many battlements does the tower have on the main façade?
